Seeking a Signature Scent

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The time has come, now in my upper 20s life, to adopt a signature scent.  This topic has come up in TWO conversations recently, and I just can't avoid it anymore.

NOTE: I know the word "scent" sounds more like something that a dog seeks out, but I'm big on alliteration.  :) I'm looking for... how do you say it (imagine French accent here)? A fragrance.  Perfume.
Let's lay out all the facts first:  I do not hold scents well.  I do not hold good scents well.  In fact, I tend to actually ATTRACT smells like cigarette smoke and greasy diners, but REPEL $80.00 smells that can be purchased at fancy department stores and sampled on small paper sticks.

My sister smells good.  Even if she's worn the same shirt for three days and not showered (and sometimes she does this), she still smells nice.  Jeff always smells good too.  Truly, always.  (This isn't normal for a man, right?) I have a legitimate fear that one day my children will like snuggling with their dad and their aunt more than their mother because I smell like onions or burned popcorn.  You get the idea?

We have a minor crisis on our hands here folks...

SO, I'm enlisting your help on this oh-so-important quest for a signature scent.  What do you wear?  What are your favorites?  I'm not looking for something "cheap" necessarily, but I want to be able to afford to wear it everyday.

Additionally, I keep hearing people say that different scents work for different people.  I get this, but I'm still not really sure how to identify what actually smells GOOD on me.  So far, honestly, I'm 0 for about 17. (And, yes, probably 13 of those are Bath & Body Works body sprays - so what if I never stopped being a middle school girl.)  I feel like this trial and error method could be quite costly and time consuming.  Any tips there?

And, finally, how in the world do I get that blasted scent to stick around?!?  I don't want to be one of those women that walks by and people begin to wheeze and have allergic reactions, but it would be nice - just once - for someone to say "oh, you smell so good, what are you wearing?"  Is there hope for me?

Help please!

  1. I have never been able to get a scent to stick either until I discovered YSL Opium scented body powder...
yes that stuff that is probably sitting on your grandmothers vanity WITH a powder puff included!
I felt so old when I first started using it but it was the only scent I have ever used that lasted more than the thirty seconds it took for me to put it on!
And I don't think it is the scent but rather that it is a powder!
So you could always try out a scented powder!

  3. Hmm I don't have any advice on getting it to stay besides what you've probably already heard-on your pulses. I wear Daisy by Marc Jacobs, Hot by Ralph Lauren, Harijuku Lovers, Be Delicious by DKNY (the green apple) and those are my nicer ones then I have a bunch of cheap ones and the funny thing is I get the most compliments when I wear this old Abercrombie one I've had for years!
I really like switching it up on the smells.. I don't know why!
Once you find one you like I recommend looking on ebay for deals! I've gotten some off there!

  4. If you want to try them out, hit up your local Sephora store. Ours carries the little sample vials of a lot of different perfumes and will usually give them to you for free if you just ask!

  11. I adopted my "signature scent" last year and I still love it. I wear Bright Crystal by Versace. Don't let the label scare you- it isn't any pricier than most other perfumes. I tried it one day when I was in a store, then a couple weeks later I couldn't stop thinking about how much I loved the scent, so I went back for it and have been using it ever since.
It is kind of daunting b/c there are so many to choose from, but you'll find something.
As for getting it to stick, use the lotion version of the perfume, then spritz the perfume on. :)

  15. I can't weigh in on this post (since my sense of smell is terrible, and I usually smell like baby puke these days), but I did just add my 30 Before 30 list. I just stumbled upon your blog yesterday through another blogger, and I love the 30 Before 30 idea! And I love your blogging -- I will be visiting you here more often :)

  16. Heavenly by Victoria's Secret smells good!! Its also kind of light, so its not too overbearing for those around you but I find it hangs around for a while.

also.. try spraying scent above your head so it gets a little in your hair, when your hair moves throughout the day its like the scent is renewed.

Clinique Happy is also nice :-)
