Did You Name Your Baby Before First Sight?

Ok, clearly Jeff is out of town and I'm spending way too much time watching TV and playing on the computer... But, did anyone else catch Kristen Bell on Ellen this afternoon?

Source
Honestly, I couldn't tell you one single movie or TV show she is in; but, I might have just developed a new celebrity-girl crush.  She is adorable and hilarious and her baby-daddy/fiance is Dax Shepherd (who I love from Parenthood; and, before today, I had never thought of him as having any other life outside of Jasmine, Jabar, and the Braverman fam).  What more could you ask for in a person?

Anyway, in her conversation with Ellen, Bell told her that they had to wait until they saw the baby to give it a name; to which Ellen responded, "Oh, it's not going to look like that all its life, don't name it 'Wrinkly Thing' or something." I couldn't agree more, Ellen.  Does a baby really pop out looking like a Fred or a Bethany?  Seriously.  I want to know.

Bell eventually conceded by saying, "They do look like earth worms when they are born, don't they?"  Why didn't I think of that comparison? It is perfect - adorable, loveable, lay-on-your-chest earthworms.  Luckily, they only get cuter with time (and a bath and, sometimes, some blue lights). :)

Anyway,  you should watch the clip.  Here it is:

And, tell me, did you name your baby before you actually met him/her?  Or, if you waited, how exactly did you know?

P.S. There was a lot of talk about Bell's obsession with sloths too, so I had to do some research.  This video from the last time she was on Ellen is AWESOME.  You must watch, you know, in case you need to procrastinate doing laundry or making dinner too.  (And, pay attention, isn't that totally Crosby talking in the background?  Love.it.)

  3. I thought this was hilarious! When my pug had surgery and couldn't walk, I used to put him in a baby bjorn and wear him to tailgates at Clemson! haha Kristin Bell is SO cute! The sloth video was awesome! And lastly, I totally agree.... it seems so weird to me that Dax isn't married to Jasmine!

  4. She's also from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and is the narrator of the show Gossip Girl. Love her! And Dax! We chose a name for our daughter at around 16w I can't imagine waiting. I've heard of people choosing a few names they loved and then seeing the baby and picking from the list. I wanted to refer to our daughter by name for as long as we could while pregnant, so choosing a name was important

  5. I am watching this episode right Now!! I love Ellen. Kristen Bell is so cute and that video of her and the sloth...too funny!!! :)
I did name my kids before they were born. Well for my first I had names picked out, and named her when she was born!

  8. I would also like to recommend Veronica Mars. Kristen Bell is adorable....I like to wait at least 2 years & then let my kid pick their own name. But after my first child deemed herself Princess, we decided to name our 2nd kid in before he was born....And I'm totally kidding. We named both of our children before they were born. I just needed my baby to have a name. Just like I needed to know the gender. I have many friends though that didn't decide until birth.

  9. We picked out 1 girl name and 1 boy name around 17 weeks, and then when we found out the sex we went with that name. We have done this with all 3 of our children. I like calling them by name throughout pregnancy. I also like that their siblings knew their name and got used to their brother being called that for months before he arrived!

I watched this today, and think the sloth thing is too funny!

  10. With both of our kids, my husband and I didn't know the sex until the big birth day ... So, even though we had had two names picked out (one boy and one girl) for each occasion, we didn't know exactly "who" was coming until he/she inevitably arrived. But, yes, both of my kids were named prior to me actually meeting them.

  11. Omg, I can't even stop laughing enough to answer your questions because after watching both clips of Kristin on Ellen I too have a new girl crush! I love when Ellen gets to interview someone as quick & witty as she is! hilarious!!!!!

  12. My parents picked out my name before I was born, but they waited until I was born to decide which name I would get. I'm a triplet, so they knew what 3 names they would use... it was just a matter of deciding which baby girl got which name!

  13. Ellen is hilarious and I may have to check out who this Kristen Bell person is!

We already had our son's name picked out before we knew it was a boy and it fits him perfectly! I do like the name wrinkly worm though...maybe for our next one!

  14. Ellen is like my happy pill every day! I just love her! Can you believe she'll be 55? Not that that is old, but she just seems so young!

And Kristen Bell is absolutely adorable!

  15. Our plan was to wait to make our final decision on a name until we see our little guy. But then we kind of fell in love with a name and have been calling him by it for the last few months. I can't imagine that we'll change it at this point... but we're still not sharing it until he's born. ;)

  16. It took us forever to name our daughter. I'm a teacher too and every name my husband suggested made me think of a student I didn't really like. Ha! When we finally agreed on a name that was it. I would never have been able to leave the hospital if we waited until she arrived to choose what was written on her birth certificate!

  17. I am on the opposite end of this spectrum. My husband and I saw a name we liked on a sample wedding invitation and held on to it for 16 years (yeah, late start!:) ). So our daughter has a beautiful, unique, Welsh name that was bestowed on her from a fake wedding invite and it fits her perfectly.

  18. I never watch Ellen. But caught this episode. And promptly fell in love with this girl, too. SO weird. And SO WEIRD seeing her husband, you know, have a life outside of being Jabaar's dad.

    BAHAHA

  19. Haha! Love the video. She is too cute, i agree. And i LOVE dax!!!! Parenthood is my favorite.

I totally agree, though. I've known a few people (not many!) to say they would name the baby when it came out. And i just...yeah. I don't see how a newborn looks like a lucy or mary or david. But to each his own! :)

  20. Okay, I didn't read all of those comments or watch the videos (yet), but you should really look up the one of her on Ellen when they showed the video of Dax giving her a birthday present! It was a visit with a sloth and it was hilarious!
Baby name? We chose before she was born and it was one of the hardest decisions we ever made. I'm not sure babies "look" like one name or not. They seem to just take on the name you chose for them.

  21. I watched this, too, and Chad and I were joking about how we had Cameron's name picked out as soon as we knew it was a boy!!! And, we have a girl name picked out for the future...we are kind of planners. :)
