Three Fun (but kind-of stressful) Things

I woke up this morning feeling a mix of excitement and stress.  I can't believe how fast this summer is going... How can it already be almost mid July?  Really, this has already been one of the best summers I can remember.  I LOVE this age with Sam, and I feel like we have really soaked up every single week.  We've traveled a lot, played a lot, relaxed a lot... Really, I couldn't ask for anything more.  Well, except more time.

This week, even more so than others, I have a lot going on.  They are fun things, but they still make for busy days, late nights, and maybe a 5-hour energy drink (or two).  You know the kind.

Anyway, forgive me for my lack of creativity, but here are three fun (but kind-of stressful) things I have on my mind right now:

1. Sam's Birthday!!
Geez Louise, my boy is going to be 2 on Saturday.  I'll be writing and reflecting on that more in the next few days; but, today, I'm thinking about his PARTY on Thursday evening!  I promised myself it would be "low key" this year; and, truly, that's my intention.  I'm hosting it (weather permitting) at a neighborhood playground and serving pizza and cake only.  But, "low key" isn't really my forte when it comes to parties... I've got several little projects up my sleeve, so we'll see if they actually get executed. For now, here's a sneak peek at the invitation...
2. Decorating.
As a surprise anniversary gift to me, Jeff brought in painters this weekend to re-do our guest room and master bedroom.  I've been thinking about these two rooms and gathering items for months now; but, since Jeff told me Friday evening that they were coming Saturday at 8AM, I did have to make some fast decisions.  I settled on Valspar's Tempered Gray for the walls, and I LOVE how they turned out; both rooms look bright and fresh and clean (and, currently, like a total train wreck).  I'm SO excited to finally get in there and start decorating... Fast.  We have house guests for Thursday night and early next week; so, I've got my work cut out for me.  :)  Here are some "inspiration photos" I'm currently loving:

3. What to wear.
We will be attending a wedding for a dear family friend this coming weekend in Knoxville, TN with lots of people I don't get to see often.  I bought this dress from JCrew Factory a few months ago with the intention of wearing it to this event.

Of course, at the time, I had lofty plans of losing 15 pounds and becoming miraculously tan and toned by then, which... did not happen.  Now I'm not really sure how to "style" it so that it looks fun and stylish despite its conservative cut.  What do you think?  A belt? A statement necklace? Just fun earrings? What colors? Please advise.

As you might have guessed, it's going to be a busy (but very fun) week here.  Expect to see updates on all three things soon...

  1. PAINTERS!?!! That is the best gift idea EVER!! I wish Jeff had told Matt about that idea. :) I'm going to try to swallow my jealousy and move on, though. But I can't wait to see pictures of the redone rooms!

Love that dress!! I think a big statement necklace would be perfect...any bright color would work!! (then again, this is coming from ME. not exactly a fashion expert...so take this with a few grains of salt)I think a belt might be kind of weird with that layer thing near the waist. But maybe not? You should try on lots of options (diff necklaces, earrings, shoes, etc.) and take pictures and let us vote!!

  2. I totally agree with the PACE of this summer...super fast and super BUSY. I LOVE your party idea and I wish more people would have fun low-key evening kid parties. I might have to "copy" this idea. I really like the cut of the dress so I would not belt it. I would try a great statement necklace in turquoise, yellow, or light orange. Then go for classy earrings and maybe some nude pumps. BUT... this is coming from a middle school teacher with "little" fashion sense.
I scored an AWESOME dress/tunic top from Antro's tent sales this weekend and I am highly considering wearing it to a wedding in Chicago at the end of the month... with my 34 week baby bump. So I will totally be that pregnant chick in the too short dress, but I just can not rationalize spending money on a "nice" maternity dress.
Good luck with the party and happy decorating. Please post pics of party, decorated rooms and your final wedding ensemble.

  3. You are right about the parties. I was SO stressed at Molly's first Birthday. Her second Birthday day party rained (like all day downpours) and I was so sad. It's all Pinterest's fault!!!! Next year I am going low key all the way. Have fun! Happy Birthday Sam!

  5. Happy Birthday, Sam! I'm sure his party will be perfect! I can't wait to see your room makeovers. It's so fun making over rooms, but it's such hard work!

  6. Happy early birthday to Sam!

I love the dress! I'd say if your hair is going to be up, big earrings and if your hair is going to be down then smaller studs and a statement necklace. I think pretty much any color would work, that teal that is really in right now would be fun but since the dress is solid I don't think anything would clash. You're going to look great no matter what.

  7. A) Sam's 2 already?! (my eyes have legit beginnings of tears. Aaaaand a 'kick it' theme party?! further proof we need to be best friends - your parties are do inspiring.

    B) I can't wait for the bedroom reveals. Maybe I should come test out your guest room.

    C) statement necklace fo sho - that dress is gold. I'm so into purple these days... on the prowl for some plum hued skinnies.

  8. I can't believe Sam will be two! It is so fun to be able to keep up with you guys. :) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that dress! Purple just happens to be my fave color and I have waaaaay too much of it in my closet! I would go with some awesome earrings and a fun, strappy wedge or heel with a pop of bright color...yellow, maybe??? I also think that a tan colored strappy wedge/heel looks good with the purple jewel tones. Can't wait to see what you decide on! I have dress envy!

  10. Love your decor style--I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Wear a statement necklace for sure!! In any color!!! I LOVE that dress--and who cares about toned arms--it's the summer...(haha, says the girl who is trying to tone her flabby arms but just ate mcdonalds. You win some-lose some, right!?).

  11. that is the perfect pic for an invite, he looks so in awe and inspired lol!

nix the belt idea, it will be hidden underneath the shape of the cutout. I agree with Jessica above, big earrings if your hair is up otherwise a statement necklace and some divine shoes!

forget the 15 pounds, own what you've got and you'll be the belle of the wedding! well, except for that bride person. whatev. : )

  12. I second Miss Nikki Miller and say that the best colors to use in a bold necklace would be turquoise, yellow, or light orange! The dress is cute! Your little boy is adorable. I am excited for that age with my little guy. Have fun at the party!

  16. Not that I'm the most stylish person but I'd forgo the belt and do a great necklace... you didn't happen to get one when you got the dress did you??? That would have been too easy. And you need good shoes, doesn't mean flashy, but they need to bring everything home in a super classy way. Love the dress, if you lived closer I'd be begging to borrow it!
