When Kelis came out with the song "Bossy" last year, it easily could have been my THEME SONG. (After all, don't we all need a life theme song?!?) I prefer to call it, "organized," or "driven," or even "in charge," but deep down... I'm just a bossy girl. I know this.
My parents' love to tell the story of my first dance recital when I was four years old. The music started and all the little tots waddled out in our leotards to our designated spots. Then, while everyone else was doing their well-rehearsed ballet moves, I was busy pointing at the other girls and shaking my finger at them for not standing on their Xs. I'm so glad we have that proud moment on VHS.
Anyways, this past weekend, the Junior League hosted a Pediatric Blood Drive to support our local Children's Hospital. For the morning shift, I was in charge of (see, there it is again) organizing the volunteers to work the event. Telling people when to be where and what to do, I was right in my element. (Plus, it was all for a good cause.) But then, my number one work-in-progress, the one I can't control, Jeff, arrived - an hour early, for his donation appointment. And, according to several eye-witnesses, from several tables back I "yelled" out "YOU ARE WAY TOO EARLY!"
The girls working the sign-in table immediately turned around and looked at me in horror. Not realizing that I knew this poor man, they couldn't believe my reaction. And, even later, when I explained myself, they kept commenting about how they had never heard me yell like that. I was so embarrassed.
Later, on damage control, I tracked down Jeff - who was, by now, hooked up to the blood mobile - to apologize for "yelling." And his response? "Oh, I didn't even notice."
He is used to it. That's how bossy I am. My poor husband doesn't even notice the bossy voice anymore.
I am going to start praying for my future kids now.
P.S. A HUGE THANK YOU to my wonderful friends/sister who came out to give blood on Saturday: Kathryn, Howard, Adam, Bono, Brett, Joe, Amanda, Davey, Erika, and - of course - Jeff!
*I urge you NOT to look up the lyrics to Kelis' song. They aren't pretty. I only pay attention to the line "I'm Boss....aaay" which is repeated about 1200 times. Thanks!
I loved this post! I am a fellow bossy girl myself. Like you I don't really see it as being bossy or mean. Maybe its the teacher in me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I'm bossy too. I just like things my way... the right way! = )

"BOSSY" DID NOT COME OUT LAST YEAR. in fact, it came out in 2006. you are very behind times! :) none the less, i love you. (ps...i DO NOT love kelis, or bossy, i just like to prove my sister wrong...im really not that passionate about the song! :) )
ReplyDeleteOk...so we were totally matched for that position at the blood drive. I enjoyed being in charge after you left...except of course someone else took over my JOB without my permission!!!! I was too meek to tell her to get out of my chair!!!!! And...I'm breathing....I'm soooo over it now...sort of.
