Random question today...
Before your fiance or husband proposed, did you know it was coming?
I remember vividly the week before Jeff and I left for Utah, in December of 2006, shopping with my sister and saying something like "I bought some cute pink skiing goggles because, you know, if I get proposed to on the slopes, I need to look good." Ridiculous, but reality. Right?
Truth be told, I did get proposed to on the slopes, but cute pink goggles just didn't do the trick. I still looked windblown and tired (and I also had an eye infection at the time which was super attractive). Another bonus: because we were outside in the cold, when we finally got to the lodge and could take pictures of the ring/text them to everyone we knew, my fingers swelled up like vienna sausages. My beautiful diamond looked more like a health risk to the circulation of my ring finger.
Oh well, even swollen fingers and a red-eye couldn't spoil the joy of that day.

So... Did you know you were going to be proposed too, or did it come as a TRUE surprise? And, if you did know, did you do anything to prepare?
Let's chat!
I kind of knew. We had looked at rings and talked about it in great detail, but when it came time, I had no clue. We were in Colorado visiting his family and our trip got extended two extra days bc I came down with a cold, and on one of those extra days, he decided to go out and buy a ring and propose! While he was gone (ALL DAY!), I thought he was running errands to an auto parts store and complained to his mom about how he kept saying it would happen but it never did! Little did I know! It was so hard for her not to tell me what he was really doing. So I wasn't prepared at all. My nails hadn't been painted, I wasn't dressed up... but it was perfect. At the end of the day, he asked and I said yes and that's all that really matters. :) I love your story!
ReplyDeleteComplete surprise for me which was crazy becuase he had my family and best friend from out of state there!
ReplyDeleteI had absolutely NO idea...haha. Here's the best part: the week before, I was talking to my mom about how all of my friends were either engaged or married, and I wasn't sure if Mike would ever propose. I was being such a whiny girl..haha. Little did I know, my whole family knew that during our upcoming trip to FL, Mike was going to propose; he had asked my dad for his blessing the weekend before. However, I was clueless. We had been in FL for two days when were sitting on the beach - I was reading, oblivious to what Mike was doing. Finally, he asked me to look at something: he had written "Marry Me" in the sand. He had the ring out and asked, "Will you marry me?" I still laugh at my first response, because it was, "Are you for real?" Hahaha - a few seconds later I said yes and as they say, the rest is history! Great blog question! :)
ReplyDeleteI was clueless - until about 2 minutes beforehand! We were vacationing in Florida and he suggested a walk on the beach. That in itself wasn't weird. It got weird when he started responding to my conversation with nonsense. It got suspicious when he told me he wanted to check out a gazebo. That was in December of 2003 and today we're celebrating 7 years of marriage :)
ReplyDeleteGirl, I think your subconscious remembered that today is the three year anniversary of Davey proposing to me! We had arrived in Paris on April 1st, but he waited until the 2nd because he didn't want me to think it was a joke :) I really didn't think we would get engaged then, because I wasn't in a rush and Davey had me convinced that he needed to wait until he had saved more money for a ring. I think I was the only one who didn't suspect it, though, and I remember calling you and having a "normal" conversation about our trip to mess with you... You practically asked me "So did you get engaged or what??" Great memories :)
ReplyDeleteha! This question is VERY fitting, since I got engaged 9 days ago! So, to answer your question, yes and no. I knew he was going to propose and I knew he had the ring and we have talked extensively about getting married. BUT, I had no idea when he was going to do it. I really thought it was going to happen in May and I thought I would figure out when he was going to. But, I didn't. And he shocked me.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not engaged (yet) but my older sister just got engaged in December and I was the only one in the family who knew for about 3 weeks before he had the chance to ask my parents for their blessing! It was soooo hard, he'd asked me for help in desinging the ring and everything! I met up with him in secret and it was probably one of the most challenging things I'd ever done! haha. He was asking for my parent's blessing while he was visiting with my sister for Christmas, which meant I had to get her out of the house. long story short, she had no idea, the day before he arrived she was complaining about how who knew if he'd ever propose (they were together almost 10yrs!). It was so hard for me to keep a straight face and not spill the beans!
ReplyDeleteI knew it was coming--we had talked about marriage--but I had NO idea it was coming right then! I had asked for sterling silver earrings for my birthday so when he handed me a jewelry box, that's what I thought it was. At least it was my birthday so I looked semi-cute in the pictures anyway!
ReplyDeleteI knew it was coming because it should have already happened! And, I got a little suspicious when HE came up with the idea to go to the ballet. I knew something was up!
ReplyDeleteWe had already bought a house, and got a dog, but I didn't know it was happening when it did. He had wanted it to be a suprise, but he didn't want to screw up the ring, so he bought a pink heart ring to use as a stand in. :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know...he totally surprised me. My husband proposed to me on Christmas morning and had bought the ring the day before, while I was at the mall with him. We were out last minute shopping with my future sister-in-law and her husband. We had drawn family names so we split up in order to shop for each other, so I thought. I had even picked out what he was giving me for Christmas. We had been together for more than 4 years and I knew it would be coming. My sister-in-law was totally in on it and I believed her when she said it was going to be this year. (That is the last time I believed her! Ha.) My husband even had to sneak around to ask my dad on Christmas Eve. It would have ruined it if I saw it coming.
ReplyDeleteI knew that Andrew and I were going to get engaged at some point but had no clue he was going to propose when he did. We were in Montana for my high school reunion and on that trip I knew that he was going to be asking my dad for permission to marry me. I was giving him a tour of some cool spots in my hometown since he had never been there and when we were at a waterfall, he gave me a crackerjack box with a note inside and a paperclip ring that said "Hoping you'll be my prize" and then he had the real ring and asked me to marry him. I had no idea that he had even looked or bought a ring and he picked out the perfect one. I'm so glad that he was able to surprise me - it made for a much more special moment.
ReplyDeleteI knew that we were on the marriage track, but I really thought that it was going to be a few months down the road. So I was truly suprised when he actually proposed.
ReplyDeleteI knew because airport security searched his bag and I saw them take the box out. He didn't see me see them, so he got to feel like it was still a big surprise!
