Summer Reading

Well, approximately three of my real-life friends have told me that my "blog stinks" (or at least something like that) in the last three days.  Nothing like a little encouragement to get a girl writing again! :) Haha.

I admit, I haven't been a good blogger lately... But, I'll save the excuses and just try to jump back in.

Anyway, this is a pretty darn exciting week for me!

1.) School is officially out for summer on THURSDAY!!!

2.) Amanda and Davey are getting married on SATURDAY!!!

3.) And, I leave for the beach for a week with my family on SUNDAY!!!

More on 1 & 2 later this week, but for now...

If you've seen my skin before (think: burn-peel-pale-repeat), you'll understand that I'm not really the sun-bathing type.  My absolute FAVORITE thing to do at the beach is read.  I know, I know... I am a proud nerd.

Anyways, I'm looking for a few good beach reads, and I'm hoping you can help.

BUT FIRST... a few disclaimers:

a.) Despite the fact that I am an English teacher, I really don't like the classics.  (Unless you count Judy Blume.)  This is genuinely difficult for me to admit.  But, it's true.  Just, don't tell my students. *I do, however, plan to read one or two this summer for my 30 Before 30 goal of reading the top ten novels of all time. (At least most of them are free on my Kindle!)

b.) I also - and I realize this will make some of you cringe a little - am not a fan of Christian fiction.  (I know, I know!) I'm sure Francine Rivers is the best writer in the world, but I'm just a little weirded out by the whole concept.  No offense... really.

c.) Jodi Picoult is my favorite writer these days.  L-O-V-E her stuff.

So, any suggestions?!?!

  2. I just read a GREAT book... not sure if you can get it over there in the USA (so you'd prob have to buy online) and not sure if Americans would like/ relate to this book like Aussies do but anyway i really enjoyed it:
"Playing The Field" by Zoe Foster

  4. I'm going back to Madeline L'Engle books from my childhood. They are great stories and I understand them so much better now ;)

Swiftly Tilting Planet is the one I'm reading now.

I hope you have a fun few weeks.

  5. Davey kept asking me if you were OK because you hadn't updated your blog and finally concluded last night that your computer must be broken :) That boy is addicted! I've been an awful reader these past few months, but did get sucked into The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on my mini-French vacation and read the whole thing (400+ pages in 72 hours). It might be a bit racy for you, but it's a good read!

  6. The Art of Racing in the Rain - It's a dog's point of view on the world! Your going to LOVE this!

  7. Same Kind of Different As Me - A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. and really a challenging and life-changing book. I have given MANY copies away to friends and family and have re-read the book myself...on top of reading it aloud to my husband on a long car ride. Read It. Love It.

  11. There is nothing better than passing on a good book...here are a few of my recent favorites:
    - The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
    - Little Bee
    - Dog Handling
    - Summer Affair

The last two are classic "you-all-go-on-to-dinner-while-I-stay-here-and-finish-my-book" kind of beach reads.

  12. I honestly wasn't that big a fan of Redeeming Love. I mean, I read it and liked it okay, but I thought it was a bit cheesey. I have to agree with someone above who said Water for Elephants (I think I listened to it last summer on my way to meet you girls in the mountains!)... especially since they're making a movie of it with your girl Reese! And I've heard really good things lately about Same Kind of Different as Me and The Help. They're both on my list.
