Caught in the Act

No... not that act.  (Gross!)

This morning the sun was shining, I was having an exceptionally good hair day, I ate a hearty (but healthy) breakfast, and... I was approximately 15 minutes late to work.  At some jobs this might not be a big deal.  But, when I am late, I have 25 teenage faces staring at me and 25 teenage bodies (the ones attached to those faces) standing outside my locked classroom drawing attention to my tardiness.

Today, not only were those 25 joys waiting for me, but the assistant principal and a handful of other teachers were also standing RIGHT in the doorway when I entered.  Literally, I felt like I was playing "Red Rover" upon entering the school.  Sure, it felt a bit like an exhilirating parade for a moment; but, the excitement faded as I realized the time.  I was caught.

The truth is... I am late to EVERYTHING.  This is weird because, in most other areas, I am incredibly organized and Type A.  But I can't, for the life of me, be early anywhere.

I blame this primarily on Jeff and Addy.  Back when I was a single gal, I could be called "a morning person" (gasp).  But now, I have adopted the habits of my family and I.love.to.sleep.  A LOT!  So waking up is difficult.

I'd like to say the problem stops there, but the truth is, I usually still get up in, technically, enough time to make it to work on time. And, I wish I could say I had a million things to do in the morning but, if I'm honest with myself, I do NOTHING productive in the mornings.  I drink coffee.  I read (sometimes).  I check email (a lot).  I do NOT do reasonable things like - feed/walk my dog (she sleeps more than she sheds - I know!), dress small children (I wish!), make big breakfasts (yea right!), exercise, OR follow an extensive beauty routine.  Truth be told, I could be ready for work in 25 minutes if I didn't mess around.

So, there you have it.  A confession of sorts.  I am chronically late with no good reason.  I just needed to get that off my chest.

I think admitting that I have a problem is supposed to be half the battle.  Good.

Step 2: Figuring out WHY I am tardy and HOW to fix it.  (According to this little quiz, I am a willfully ignorant time trapper who tends to be messy and stressy. AHH!)

Step 3: Um... stop being tardy?  One can only hope!

(And, for the record, I don't think the principal cared one bit, which makes this whole thing even more difficult to overcome.)

Seeking a Signature Scent

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The time has come, now in my upper 20s life, to adopt a signature scent.  This topic has come up in TWO conversations recently, and I just can't avoid it anymore.

NOTE: I know the word "scent" sounds more like something that a dog seeks out, but I'm big on alliteration.  :) I'm looking for... how do you say it (imagine French accent here)? A fragrance.  Perfume.
Let's lay out all the facts first:  I do not hold scents well.  I do not hold good scents well.  In fact, I tend to actually ATTRACT smells like cigarette smoke and greasy diners, but REPEL $80.00 smells that can be purchased at fancy department stores and sampled on small paper sticks.

My sister smells good.  Even if she's worn the same shirt for three days and not showered (and sometimes she does this), she still smells nice.  Jeff always smells good too.  Truly, always.  (This isn't normal for a man, right?) I have a legitimate fear that one day my children will like snuggling with their dad and their aunt more than their mother because I smell like onions or burned popcorn.  You get the idea?

We have a minor crisis on our hands here folks...

SO, I'm enlisting your help on this oh-so-important quest for a signature scent.  What do you wear?  What are your favorites?  I'm not looking for something "cheap" necessarily, but I want to be able to afford to wear it everyday.

Additionally, I keep hearing people say that different scents work for different people.  I get this, but I'm still not really sure how to identify what actually smells GOOD on me.  So far, honestly, I'm 0 for about 17. (And, yes, probably 13 of those are Bath & Body Works body sprays - so what if I never stopped being a middle school girl.)  I feel like this trial and error method could be quite costly and time consuming.  Any tips there?

And, finally, how in the world do I get that blasted scent to stick around?!?  I don't want to be one of those women that walks by and people begin to wheeze and have allergic reactions, but it would be nice - just once - for someone to say "oh, you smell so good, what are you wearing?"  Is there hope for me?

Help please!

Mysterious Gift

To the person who mysteriously dropped off four yellow books on my front porch:

THANK YOU!  Seriously, my yellow book collection has almost doubled in size in the last few months because people have been SO generous.  This collection is even MORE fun when it comes from lots of different people who love me!  :)  What a sweet, sweet surprise!!

Now, I just wish you would reveal yourself so I could thank you more personally!  :)
(And no, contrary to how creepy this 'mysterious drop off at my house' might sound, I DO NOT think this is a stalker of any sort... Believe it or not, I have several real life friends who know about my collection of yellow books too!)

THANK YOU MYSTERIOUS YELLOW-BOOK GIFTER!  You brightened these rainy days!

...I'm off for a b-day dinner with my family now... Seriously, we can stop celebrating tomorrow! :)

Not Me Monday

Time for another weekend recap with MckMama...

I did NOT have a wonderfully relaxing and fun weekend with two of my very best friends from college in Richmond/King George, Virginia.  It was NOT, at all, exactly what I needed to get me through one more week until spring break.

Surprisingly, the three of us did NOT sign up for a race months ago, then decide to only walk the race, and then actually just skip it all together.  (Feel free to click on this link to NOT see our results... no, seriously, you won't see them.) I did NOT, secretly, know this would happen all along. :)

Certainly we did NOT lay in bed eating candy and watching the race on TV instead.  We would never do that...

In addition to that respectable decision, we did NOT ride around downtown Richmond in Lindsey's mini-van.  (Which, she did NOT buy because it was a wise financial investment, but actually because she has been dreaming of owning one all her life.) We did NOT kind-of LOVE the Sienna.

Oh, and because we are super cool and un-awkward, we definitely did NOT get chased and honked at by another car for approximately five minutes in the mini-van.  We did NOT think these people were flicking us off and preparing to shoot us.  And, we were NOT shocked/mortified when we finally realized that they just wanted to tell us our lights were off.  We had NOT driven around town for thirty minutes with NO lights.

While staying in a nice hotel, we were MUCH more mature and smooth.  For example, we absolutely did NOT have to go to the front desk three separate times to ask for items such as: a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a hairdryer (which ended up actually being in the room in a bag labeled "Hair Dryer" - imagine that).

Lindsey also did NOT think a nicely dressed woman on the elevator was an elevator operator, OR almost throw up all over the fancy lobby.  We actually looked like we TOTALLY fit in there.

In health related news, Lindsey did NOT have to carry snacks in her pockets at all times because she's pregnant.  And, more importantly, Liz and I definitely did NOT "catch" pregnancy and use the opportunity to eat incessantly the whole weekend - including during church.  We also did NOT decide to name the baby "Bud Quixote Shubert."  (Even though that is, pretty much, the best name I've ever seen.)

And finally, Addy did NOT fall in love with Nacho.  She also did NOT literally LAY in a mud puddle just seconds before our departure for home.  She is fresh and well-behaved at ALL times.

It was NOT a good weekend at all.

I do NOT love these girls like crazy OR wish the rest of "the 12" had been there! :)

It's Here... 30 Before 30

Well, the moment we've all (or... maybe just me) been waiting for is here.  TODAY IS MY GOLDEN BIRTHDAY - 26 on the 26th.  I can remember when that felt so far away, and 26 felt so old.  I'm officially NOT in my early twenties anymore.  Where does time go?  Really.

Anyways, to celebrate, I've created a list of 30 Things to Do Before I'm 30.  I'm hoping this will keep me accountable to really LIVING, and not just getting lost in the busyness of day-to-day.

Want to join in???

All you have to do is:
  • Pick a milestone that works for you. (Trust me, I KNOW life doesn't end at 30... Thank Goodness!)
  • Make a list of things to accomplish between now and then. They can be big or small things... To me, this is just one step closer to living life a little fuller!!
  • Post my "30 Before 30" button on your page to let everyone know you're playing along (you can get this in HTML form on the sidebar of my blog).

Giveaway WINNER & Some Random Fun

First and foremost, I am happy to announce the lucky winner of The Letter Tree Monogram Tote!  I had a total of 93 entries, which was WAY better than I expected.  Thank you ALL for participating! I hope you, at least, found a new favorite shopping spot.

Congratulations to ..... JENNIFER LYNCH!  Jen is actually a real-life friend of mine, and I KNOW she will love this prize -- it will be perfect for toting materials to and from her preschool classroom!  (P.S. I had one of my students do this drawing today... I told them that every Thursday I put all my friends' names on paper and then draw one to decide who I will hang out with over the weekend.  I love my job!)
In other important news, Addy will be going on her first official date this weekend.  I am happily taking her to King George, VA to meet my good friend Nacho Schubert (and his human mom and dad too).  Tuesday, as a special surprise for me, Jeff took Addy to get groomed and ready for her big debut.  He even completed her feminine look with orange bows in each ear.  When I told my girl friend Lindsey this, she quickly began to prepare Nacho.  Check out her blog for pictures.  Hilarious.  I'm sure I'll have plenty of romantic news to report when we get back!

And, last but not least, one final reminder about the reveal of 30 Before 30 tomorrow!  I'm going to have my list up at 12AM.  Please grab my brand new button for your page and GET READY to LINK to your list. Honestly, I'm a little too excited about this.

Make-Over!!

So.... you probably noticed that my blog looks a little different today.  YAY!  Thanks to Tricia Nae Designs, I have a new look... and I LOVE IT!!!  Ya'll, I literally drove Tricia CRAZY with my ocd-ness... But she was wonderful!  Oh, I am so excited.  I probably won't work at all today... just stare at my new blog.  :)  No, seriously.

Come back later to see the winner of the monogram tote giveaway AND.... Get busy grabbing that brand-new 30 Before 30 button for tomorrow's BIG DAY!

Wishful Wednesday - Handbags

'I wish' .... I could afford one of these handbags without putting a dent in my pocketbook!

Handbags really aren't my thing to be honest.  In fact, a few years ago I had a really "authentic-looking" Fendi bag, and I was actually a little embarrassed by it.  (Not that there is anything wrong with a nice purse... I just would usually rather something else.) I do LOVE the classic LongChamp bags, however.  (This is the one I'm carrying now.  It is a splurge and I'm thankful for times like birthdays and Christmas and VERY generous parents/sister -- they keep me in style!)

I would say I'd like one in every color, but the truth is, I am WAY too lazy to change my purse that often.  The last one I had I literally carried until pencils started sticking out of the holes in the corners.  (Classy, I know!)

I also really like the look of these leather beauties from JCrew.  (Shoot, they are just as expensive as "designer labels.")

And, while we're on the subject of AWESOME BAGS, be sure you enter my Letter Tree giveaway for this cute monogrammed tote right here --- not exactly a handbag, but still SO excellent!  Today is the LAST DAY to enter, and I will announce the winner tomorrow!!

I Would Like to Take a Moment...

... To apologize to anyone I have come into contact with over the past week and a half.

I KNOW that it sounds like I am either a.) a frog, b.) a 90 year old smoker, or c.) dying of the plague, BUT, I ASSURE YOU, it is just the common cold.

I know because, despite the fact that I take my temperature approximately 17 times a day, I have yet to cross the 98.7 mark.

I know because, despite the above fact, I went to the doctor yesterday.  And, even though she actually said to me "I'm glad you waited so long to come... It is really frustrating when people come in with just a little cough," I still sat there looking pathetic and basically BEGGING for a diagnosis.

Diagnosis: Common cold.

So, little ladies that I work with, please stop staring at me in the teacher's lounge like I am going to infect you with some deadly disease.  I'm embarrassed, I really am.  If it was my choice, I'd have Whooping Cough or something like that, at least then I could stay home from work with some legitimacy.

(I'd like to wear this on a sign around my neck... I might actually do it.  Thoughts?)

Not Me Monday: Girls Weekend Edition

It's been a few weeks, but I'm joining MckMama again this week to tell what I HAVE NOT been doing recently... Oh, you know, really miserable stuff like meeting old friends for a Taylor Swift concert on a beautiful spring weekend...Uggg.

For starters, I did NOT obsess over what to wear to the concert, buy four dresses, solicit tons of advice, and ultimately wear a plain black cotton dress from TJ Maxx and a standard cardigan.  I am much "braver" and "trendier" than that.

That's the best picture we got of my outfit; you girls were right, I would have BURNED UP in a turtleneck and tights.  Even the cardi didn't last long! (Unpictured: cowboy boots.)

Taylor Swift did NOT wear almost the exact same outfit you guys recommended I wear - yellow dress and boots.  I definitely would have recognized sound fashion advice like that and taken it.  Duh! (I probably would have looked just like her.)

I was certainly NOT the palest person at the concert.  Most of the students at UVA are hideous, untanned, and fat.

I am NOT obsessed with Taylor Swift, and I am not relating everything about my life to one of her songs now.  I fully recognize that she is a pop-musician and my life is NOTHING like hers.

I am NOT, secretly, wishing I was sixteen and in the middle of a horrible break-up with a jerk boy who cheated on me after he promised he loved me.  (That would be a super weird thing to wish for.)

And, P.S... I was NOT later reminded that I am, in fact, not sixteen, when I drove my mom's minivan through campus and had fraternity boys mockingly point and blow kisses at me.  This made me feel exceptionally young and awesome.

Finally, by all means, I am NOT considering long, curly, blonde extensions.

NOT me. :)

Oh, but I did, however, learn several new facial expressions and methods of tossing my hair around wildly that seem to really evoke a lot of excitement and cheering from large crowds of teenagers.  I'm planning on trying these out with my students today.  I'll let you know how it goes!

(P.S. Don't forget to enter my fun giveaway here.  It's open until Wednesday at midnight.)

Off to See Taylor

Well, friends, I got "stuff" done yesterday.

Finished grades at school? Check!
Got my nails done? Check!  (And trust me, this was necessary.)
Cleaned my house? Check!  (Ahhhh.)
Did some laundry? Check!
Traded out (Jeff's) winter clothes?  Check!
Picked up dry cleaning?  Check!
Returned phone calls? Check!
Went grocery shopping? Check!
Had friends over for a cookout and went to hear a great band? Check and check!

Overall, a successful "Get Things Done" done.

*And, I confess, I DID have lunch with my mom and sis; and I DID have to have Jeff complete several things on my list... But, it did get done!

I'm off to see Taylor Swift now.  :) And, I'll probably be wearing jeans.  In the words of my sister, "Those people on your blog obviously have no idea HOW pale you are!"  Ha.

Or, something like this... (Good call Sarah!)

Have a great, sunny, weekend, and... Happy Spring!!!!!!

Operation Get Things Done

I specifically remember a conversation I had with two of my closest friends right before I got married, standing in my kitchen at our first apartment obsessing over how to get the black marks off of our white linoleum floor.  I was worried that I would spend so much time cleaning and being "busy," that I would neglect more important things like spending time with my new husband. Based on my track record of being slightly OCD/overachiever/organized-fanatic up until that point, it was a legitimate concern.

Fast forward 2.75 years.  Um, girls, your prayers paid off.  I, CLEARLY, function in extremes.  It seems these days, I NEVER do housework or any of the other "chores" that need to get done.  *I am however, excellent at updating my blog, eating three square meals a day, and finding time to go late night shopping with my sister.

I need some balance.

SO... Inspired by this post from one of my new favorite bloggers, I am officially designating today: Get Things Done Day 2010.  My "To Do" list has been growing for weeks and, instead of making me feel free, I feel stressed, dirty, and weighed-down.

I won't be checking my blog anymore today.  (Trust me, this will be incredibly difficult.)  I will be cleaning, picking up drycleaning, making my bed, returning a few phone calls, etc. etc. etc.

Thank you for your support.

(And, in the meantime, make SURE you enter my giveaway for an awesome monogrammed bag!)

See you tomorrow!

I LOVE MONOGRAMS!! (Read: Another Excellent Giveaway)

How beautiful is a good monogram?  I just LOVE their look. So classy and preppy and southern - all traits I aspire to attain myself one day. Seriously, if I could, I would monogram EVERYTHING I own.  No lie.

And then, I found...
Understanding my LOVE for three perfectly placed initials, you can imagine my excitement when The Letter Tree contacted me about hosting a giveaway on my blog.  This is an incredible shop where you can personalize ANYTHING.  Seriously, they've thought of EVERYTHING.  Ahhh... a dream!
What more could a girl want?

Being a practical one, I chose this ADORABLE tote for me.  I've used the L.L. Bean version of a bag like this for the past three years as my "school bag."  I'll admit, it has been good to me, and it was going to be pretty tough to beat...  But, THIS little beauty exceeded ALL my expectations.

Not only is it SO cute, but it also is sturdy and big enough to fit ALL my books, binders, laptop, et al. The arm straps are padded and ultra comfy. AND, it has a nice zipper top that will keep its contents superfrom ending up all over my car every morning on the way to work. Plus, as if all that wasn't great enough, how cute are the colors and the font? I.absolutely.LOVE.it. You should see me proudly toting this thing around town. (Hopefully, I will resist the urge to carry it as my purse.)

ANYWAYS, even better news than my great bag:
The Letter Tree is giving away one of these amazing bags right here on my blog!  SCORE!  (Of course, you can pick the monogram, the font, and have your choice of several color options.)

Here's how it works:
For ONE entry: Visit http://www.thelettertree.com/ and leave a comment on this post telling me what your very favorite item is.  (This one is required to participate!)

For ANOTHER entry: Join their mailing list and tell me in your comment that you did this too! (You can do this on the bottom left of their home page.)

And, for a BONUS entry: Become a follower of my blog and leave a comment telling me you are.  (This works for "old" followers too... Just remind me in your comment.)

The giveaway is open to all US residents and will be open until Wednesday night 3/24 at 11:59PM. I will announce the winner one week from TODAY!

Oh, you are just going to LOVE this place

Calling All Fashionistas

Ok ladies, I need some style advice.  (i.e. I have cleaned my ENTIRE house including the oven and all the cabinets in procrastination of my final essays for grading, and now, I need a new project.)

This weekend, I will be attending a very important event...  This event requires me to look super cute.  This event, in case you were wondering, is the Taylor Swift Concert in Charlottesville, VA.  I'll be going with my mom, sister, and five of my mom's sorority sisters + their daughters.  I have literally been "planning my outfit" for weeks.  I mean, what if Taylor happens to call me up on stage, OR, worse, I get invited to a college party.  I'm sure you can understand the pressure surrounding this event.

Pretty much, my only requirement for the outfit is that I not "look fat," and that it goes with cowboy boots.  (I mean, of course, right?) After purchasing and returning several dresses, I think I've finally settled on this one from Anthropologie:

It is called the "All Seasons Shirtdress" and the description says it "goes great paired with a skinny turtleneck, a cozy cardi, or just your favorite sandals."  I can't go wrong here, right?

Well, maybe...

I WANT to wear a black "skinny" turtleneck under this, black tights, and my cowboy boots.  That would be my perfect outfit.  (I LOVE turtlenecks and tights, remember?)  BUT... It is supposed to be around 70 degrees this weekend.  This is a problem because my legs are the color of skim milk (you know, white but kind-of transparent) and my knees are still scarred like an eight year old girl's from this incident.  Oh, what's a girl to do?

So... Here's where you come in:

What are the rules for wearing tights and turtlenecks?  The concert will be at night, and it isn't officially spring yet.  So, should I just go ahead with my Plan A?  Should I get a spray tan and skip the tights? Pair the dress with a "cozy" cardi and tights instead? Cut the cowboy boots (remember, this is a country concert) and wear leggings? Bag the dress all together and wear jeans?

I need feedback! Please help!

P.S. Did I mention that everyone in Charlottesville is beautiful?  They are.

Happy St. Addy's Day!!!!

Today is a very special day for me.  Not only do I get to wear green - which I LOVE - and celebrate my pale, freckled, hot-tempered, Irish-ness, BUT, it is also Addy's 2nd Birthday!!!

On the day we got her.  (May 2008)

And today.  Doesn't she look so grown up?

*Can you tell I need a BABY to take pictures of?!?  :)

Oh and... Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!

Wishful Wednesday: If I Were a Rich Girl

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nahnahnahnahnahnaaa...
This week's topic:
'I wish' .... I could win the lottery REAL soon, and I would ______.

The real question is: would you...
1.) quit your job/career
2.) continue working

Ok, so, if I won the lottery, I would... have a baby.  Absolutely.  I love my job, so quitting it wouldn't really have to do with the money as much as just wanting to be home being a mommy.  I WOULD, however, like to be able to afford for Jeff to stop working (or at least work A LOT less at a job he really LOVED) so we could do fun things like hike, travel, picnic, etc. ALL the time.  I would probably also redecorate a few rooms of my house and landscape the front and back yards.  Hmm... and buy a new mom-mobile (i.e. Volvo Cross Country).  Oh, I could really go wild with this!

And just for kicks...
According to http://www.makemebabies.com/ here's what our little one would look like:

Umm... Let's hope not.

Until then... reality calls.  Research Papers: here.I.come.

I'm Bossy

When Kelis came out with the song "Bossy" last year, it easily could have been my THEME SONG.  (After all, don't we all need a life theme song?!?)  I prefer to call it, "organized," or "driven," or even "in charge," but deep down... I'm just a bossy girl.  I know this.

My parents' love to tell the story of my first dance recital when I was four years old.  The music started and all the little tots waddled out in our leotards to our designated spots.  Then, while everyone else was doing their well-rehearsed ballet moves, I was busy pointing at the other girls and shaking my finger at them for not standing on their Xs.  I'm so glad we have that proud moment on VHS.

Anyways, this past weekend, the Junior League hosted a Pediatric Blood Drive to support our local Children's Hospital. For the morning shift, I was in charge of (see, there it is again) organizing the volunteers to work the event.  Telling people when to be where and what to do, I was right in my element.  (Plus, it was all for a good cause.)  But then, my number one work-in-progress, the one I can't control, Jeff, arrived - an hour early, for his donation appointment.  And, according to several eye-witnesses, from several tables back I "yelled" out "YOU ARE WAY TOO EARLY!"

The girls working the sign-in table immediately turned around and looked at me in horror.  Not realizing that I knew this poor man, they couldn't believe my reaction.  And, even later, when I explained myself, they kept commenting about how they had never heard me yell like that.  I was so embarrassed.

Later, on damage control, I tracked down Jeff - who was, by now, hooked up to the blood mobile - to apologize for "yelling." And his response?  "Oh, I didn't even notice."

He is used to it.  That's how bossy I am.  My poor husband doesn't even notice the bossy voice anymore.

I am going to start praying for my future kids now.

P.S. A HUGE THANK YOU to my wonderful friends/sister who came out to give blood on Saturday: Kathryn, Howard, Adam, Bono, Brett, Joe, Amanda, Davey, Erika, and - of course - Jeff!

*I urge you NOT to look up the lyrics to Kelis' song.  They aren't pretty.  I only pay attention to the line "I'm Boss....aaay" which is repeated about 1200 times.  Thanks!

Top Two Tuesday

These people are always putting their Linkys up early. :) Oh well... I can handle it!

Top Two Celebrity Styles:

Piece of cake!

1. Reese Witherspoon.  (My college girlfriends might remember my mantra "WWRW" - What Would Reese Wear?  Let's be honest, I probably still ask myself this at least three times a week... I blame her for my obsession with black and flats.)

2. Katie Holmes.  I loved her as a tomboy on Dawson's Creek, and I love her as a classy NY mommy.  (Let it be said, however, that I do think TomKat is a little wacko!)

Key Elements:
- Skinny Jeans
- Black
- Big Sunglasses
- Big Purse
- Incredible hair & make-up
- The ability to look amazing whether totally casual or totally glam!

... I'm workin' on it.  One step at a time.

Check-out The Undomestic Momma for more celebrity inspirations.  Congrats on surviving yet another Monday!
